I was finally able to put together the blemish control soap yesterday. I've unmolded it today but it is still just a bit wet so I'm letting it sit for a bit before cutting it into bars. I made this soap via cold process so it will be curing for a few weeks to harden up. My ingredients are as follows:
extra virgin olive oil infused with rosemary
sweet almond oil
grapeseed oil
rice bran oil
coconut oil
palm oil
palm kernel oil
castor oil
jojoba oil
green tea
essential oils
chamomile
peppermint
slippery elm
comfrey leaf
calendula
aloe vera
french green clay
allantoin
As you can see... a lot of ingredients. The herbs and tea were used to make an infusion to combine with the lye instead of just filtered water. Most every ingredient has a beneficial side effect for troubled skin (ie. soothing, antibacterial, healing, absorbing, etc.). I used essential oils of tea tree and lavender which are both antibacterial and very strongly scented so as to mask the weird medicinal smell that was produced by all of the herbs. Also, the natural color of the soap was a strange brown color due to all the herbs, so I tinted the soap with extra green tea powder to make the soap a palatable green.
This should be a very effective acne treatment and preventative soap. "I have an idea forming in my head" regarding the finished soap. I'll just have to see if I can flesh it out more by the time the soap cures. I'll keep everyone posted.
For those that are interested, here is a rundown of the pertinent properties for the ingredients I've selected for this soap.
sweet almond oil - excellent oil for dry, inflamed, or irritated skin
grapeseed oil - a light oil, rich in vitamins, that absorbs easily into the skin leaving no oily residue
rice bran oil - an oil that is rich in natural vitamin E and in acids that promote gentle exfoliation
castor oil - an oil that is extremely soothing to the skin
jojoba oil - a non-greasy oil, easily absorbed into the skin, and that nourishes and prevents dryness
green tea - an antioxidant and antibacterial tea that has been linked with acne prevention - fighting bacteria, reducing redness and inflammation, and can deter hormone activity
rosemary - antiseptic, antibacterial, astrigent, and fungicidal
chamomile - anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and disinfecting
peppermint - antiseptic
slippery elm - astringent
comfrey leaf - speeds cell renewal and contains allantoin
calendula - antiseptic, antifungal
aloe vera - known for promoting healing and treating skin irritations
french green clay - a natural clay that 'drinks' oils, toxins, and impurities, and helps clear problem skin
allantoin - valuable cell-proliferating healing agent which stimulates healthy tissue formation
lavender & tea tree essential oils - very versatile oils with antiseptic and antibiotic properties to help with skin irritation, acne, itching, and healing
